The Herbert Macaulay Factor in Nigerian Politics (1864-1946)

The socio-political and geographical landscape of Lagos is dotted with narratives of individuals who represent the dynamics and resilient nature of the city. The impacts of these individual on the history, character and morphological development of the city is legendary. One of such individual who dominated the socio-political historiography of the city from 1908 to 1946 was Mr. Herbert Macaulay. He was born on 14th of November of 1864 in broad street Lagos into aristocratic family. His father was the founder of famous C.M.S Grammar Lagos and also served as the first principal of the school. Macaulay’s mother was the daughter of Rev. Samuel Ajayi Crowther of the C.M.S church, with this aristocratic background the young Macaulay was destined to play a leading role in the political emancipation of Nigerians and the decolonisation process. Few studies have examined the career, life, and times of Macaulay in various dimensions. Yet, a lacuna still exists in our knowledge of the uniqueness of his method of mobilization, achievements, identity, and contributions to major debates and crises that defined Lagos as a complex city, where the resilience of tradition stood consistently in contrast with the eroding force of colonial modernity. This essay argued that using Macaulay personal papers to construct socio-political narratives of the man who defined the mode and scale of political engagement of Lagosians in the first half of the 20th century would illuminate our understanding of the dynamics of his socio-political life and many troubles that shape the style and scale of political, social and spiritual engagements. The essay draws from the Mr. Macaulay collections domiciled at the Africana section of the university of Ibadan to bring to the fore the life of an individual whose personal life help to defined to a very large extent the political and social dynamics of Lagos society.
