Abstract: Elder abuse is the mistreatment of older persons, men and women who are aged 60 years and above where there is an expectation of trust. The older persons are harmed by people who in normal circumstances should care for them. In Kenya, the traditional mode of caring for the elderly was within the family set up. Evidence has emerged that this social safety network for the care of the elderly has been seriously impacted. There is dearth of knowledge the extent to which the elderly experience physical, psychological, financial, sexual abuse and neglect in Kenya. Thus the objectives of this study were: to identify the forms, patterns and trends of elder abuse, the reasons why the abuse occurs and the factors that predispose the elderly and recommend intervention strategies for elder abuse in Kenya. A sample of 317 persons aged 60 and older were recruited in two sub counties in Kenya for study. Data were collected using semi structured, Focus Group Discussions and Key Informant Interviews. The paper’s focus was on the factors that predispose the elderly to abuse in Kenya.‘The key findings arising from the study clearly point to the interface of family strife and ownership of land as well as being in a polygamous marriage as predisposing factors in abuse of the elderly persons. The study recommends the need for continuing education from curriculum in schools to the education about family law and legal matters pertaining to land and at the political level representation as a special category of the elderly to deliberate on all matters pertaining to the elderly, both at the county and national government levels.
