(Un)Becoming Violence in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
Ann Laudati
University of California, Berkeley

The Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been the site of a seemingly unending series of revolving and evolving armed groups, violence against civilians, and devastation of the area’s agricultural and mineral potential with significant implications for the long term stability and development of the region. In turn, scholars have responded by exploring the origins and implications of the violence for the areas’ citizens and the surrounding landscape. In so doing, however, the DRC has become defined solely by its violence, while life outside of the edges of Congo’s horrific past and present has become the extraordinary while violence the ordinary. Drawing from empirical fieldwork in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo over a period of eleven months between 2009 and 2012, this talk considers how the quotidian ‘becomes’ Congo’s violence. The first part of my talk speaks to how and in what ways violence has indeed become part of the everyday in Congolese society complementing previous scholarship from a range of different fields. The second part of my talk attempts to then move attention away from the spaces of violence that occupy most investigations in the region, towards life outside of Congo’s violent edges. In particular, this exploratory talk challenges current conceptions, which prioritize the role of violence in shaping the everyday, and argues instead for the reverse. Rather it is the everyday and seemingly mundane, within which violence operates and subsequently through which Congo’s violence develops and becomes. By offering a fresh perspective on the state of Congo’s violence, this talk seeks to engage and inspire wider dialogue on the mundane as being and becoming violence for conflict around the world.
