Successful tobacco farming is a trifactor requiring capital investment, know-how and human capital. Typically, successful tobacco farming is achieved by leveraging knowledge and resources as well as minimising human capital without compromising quality of the farming process and product. However, in a patriarchal society the diminishing value of the female voice as age decreases impedes effective human resource management. This presentation will first discuss the current demographics of a typical tobacco farmer in Zimbabwe. The land reform program in Zimbabwe has afforded a new generation of farmers the opportunity to explore farming. I will discuss the role of demographics in tobacco farming and their effects on the emerging young farmer. I will further discuss the merits of this emerging demographic. These will be illustrated by the challenges I faced as a young female farmer and the mitigators I used during my first tobacco farming season and the impact these factors had on the farming season.
