The use of social media has significantly changed human behaviour, social relationship and interaction within the society. Social media platforms such as Twitter, blogs, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc. play active roles in enhancing the social interaction of humans and encourage active learning. On the other hand, the adverse effects of social media on humans have increased remarkably over the years. This paper employed the public sphere theory as a framework for evaluating the roles of social media and its impact on the social and human practices. One hundred and one elites and non-elites between the ages of 18 and 45 were sampled within the Lagos metropolis. This study established that most of the elite and non-elite use social media for information gathering, creating a relationship, developing professional contacts, and entertainment. It was however agreed that at the same time, the use of social media affects productivity, gives them a false sense of belonging, affects their mood and makes them too accessible. The results indicate that the use of social media has positive and negative implications which thus, have an impact on norms and practices among human persons within the society. It is therefore recommended that there should be a balance as to how social media platforms are used to enhance its positive impacts on human persons and the society at large.
