Studies on sexuality indicate that the sexual orientation of Africans is cast between the binary construction of heterosexuality and homosexuality. The cultural, religious and social lives of several African societies greatly promote heterosexuality, making it assume the role of a dominant and acceptable form of sexual orientation without recourse to the others, especially homosexuality. One area of contention amongst scholars has been the debate on the existence or non-existence of homosexuality in Africa. However, some amounts of evidence exist in 21st century Africa to buttress the claim of its existence and practice. Irrespective of the presence and the continuous daily increase in participants of homosexuality, discussions on this continue to be met with mixed feelings.
In spite of the large array of resources on African sexuality and homosexuality, little research has been done on the erotic experiences and expressions of homosexuals. Invariably, the socio-cultural and religious aspects of the African’s life that shape the erotic experiences and expressions between people pose challenges to homosexuals in this regard. Using the method of case study through life stories in Ghana, this paper seeks to explore how culture, religion and gender shape the erotic experiences of homosexuals, as well as the challenges it poses to them in society.
