Agreement relationships: elders and the negotiation of social and economic mobility in Freetown, Sierra Leone
Luisa Theresia Schneider
Oxford University, Oxford

This paper analyses the life and love histories of elders at an old age home in Freetown, Sierra Leone and discusses the role of relationships for the negotiation of social and economic mobility at different stages of their lives. In Freetown, agreement relationships are temporary relationships for the sake of gaining economic or social acceptance and mobility, where sex and keeping company are important, where romantic emotions are commonplace, but where permanent relationships or marriage are excluded. These agreements are understood as such by both partners and often negotiated openly. They are lived in parallel to other forms of relationships with spouses, main partners, one-night-stands, providers etc. and they demonstrate a hands-on approach towards countering scarcity. Through focussing on elders, this paper adds an important, but previously understudied perspective to the rich bodies of literature on intimate economies. The paper argues first, that agreement relationships are not merely employed by young people in their struggles to make a living in uprooted and constantly shifting social landscapes, but equally important among elders. Secondly, it shows that far from being new phenomena, such relationships are marked by historical, social and cultural continuations that draw on notions of personhood, gift economies and social and economic mobility. Thirdly, it highlights that agreement relationships are much more than a simple exchange of sex for gifts, goods, or money. Rather, they foster complex and often lasting emotional engagements.
