The history of Southern Rhodesia in the 1960s and 1970s has been captured within the literature as a very turbulent period in which the country was ravaged by war under uncertain political prospects for the country. The war had its impact on all those who resided in Southern Rhodesia and especially on the settler society who were considered ill-prepared to the fast changing circumstances and threat to the world they had insulated themselves. One aspect which the war had exposed in greater measure had been the deep seated fault lines that ran through white Rhodesian society. This paper will seek discuss such fault lines under volatile circumstances. It will discuss the nature of Rhodesia’s settler society by contextualising by what is meant when discussing settler society. It will also be important to unpack the history of Southern Rhodesia’s settler society, to discuss the change over time about the nature of Southern Rhodesia’s settler society and therefore adequately contextualising the discussion on the of the nature of the settler society during the 1960s and 1970s. The paper will seek to discuss that under changing circumstances the notion that the Rhodesian settler society was monolithic was comprehensively shattered, exposing the community’s largely diverse heritage, class and ideological position. This paper will also seek discuss the nature of the settler community as it relates to gender roles given the fast changing landscape and what it reveals about the settler society of Rhodesia during the two decades.
