Syllable Sequencing in Birdsong
SymposiumTalk-01
Presented by: Lena Veit
Many complex behaviors such as speech, dance or writing are composed of ordered sequences of simpler motor elements, and the flexible control of sequential behavior has broad implications for cognition and motor function. My research group studies birdsong as a model for vocal learning and skilled motor production, which relies on a specialized circuit of brain nuclei. Bengalese finch (Lonchura striata domestica) song is composed of acoustically distinct syllable types, which appear in variable order following syntactic rules. I will present recent work probing the mechanisms of syllable sequencing in Bengalese finches with behavioral experiments and neurophysiology.
