Interruptions in visual search are a common occurrence in daily life; however, they are not sufficiently explored in research. Our work explores this topic by focusing on time pressure as a potential disruptor in visual search tasks. We conducted three experiments where, where participants were asked to locate a T-shaped target among L-shaped distractors. Each trial featured two consecutive, distinct displays, each containing one target. In the first experiment, we assessed the impact of various levels of time pressure on search performance. In the second experiment, we introduced a reward condition, placing a higher value on identifying the target in the second display. In the third experiment, we introduced a condition in which the number of items in the second display was reduced, making the second search presumably easier. Overall, our results revealed that search accuracy sharply dropped as time pressure increased. Moreover, under time pressure, participants often prioritized completing the first search over a potentially more rewarding or simpler second search, and they chose to undertake the second search only when time permitted. These findings suggest that time pressure can potentially hinder the ability to modify strategies optimally according to the demands of the search task.
