In studies of aesthetics, the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is often linked to the attractiveness of the female body, with a ratio of 0.7 typically considered optimal. However, this idea not only overlooks the WHR’s ambiguity in representing body form, but also the fact that attractiveness can vary depending on the viewing angle and pose. In fact, one and the same body can appear more or less attractive based on the perspective from which it is viewed as well as the pose it takes. To account for the view dependence of attractiveness, one might use the two-dimensional (2D) WHR, which also varies with the viewing angle. Moreover, one could also assume that attractiveness is determined by the curvature of the body. To investigate the relative effects of both variables, we created photorealistic images of female bodies with varying WHRs and poses rendered from different viewing angles. The results indicate that curvature of the body contour is able to explain variance in beauty ratings beyond the (2D-) WHR.
