Cognitive control and affect are closely linked. Here I will focus on inhibitory control on the task-set level, which enables human beings to quickly and flexibly change between different task goals. I will highlight a few aspects of the mutual relationship between control and affect. On the one hand, sustained affective states modulate control processes; on the other hand, cognitive conflict and/or the control of cognitive conflict are associated with affective signals. A selection of empirical studies will be presented investigating the affective modulation of task-level inhibition and conflict adaptation, as measured by N-2 task repetition costs and congruency sequence effects, as well as the affective connotation of N-2 task repetition costs. In the former case, affective states are experimentally induced; in the latter case, affective tunings are measured in several ways. I will close with some theoretical considerations on the link between control and affect.
