Olfaction is one key sensory modality that ensures the survival of a species by guiding essential behaviors like foraging, locating a mate, and shelter, and avoiding predation in individuals. Odors then guide decision-making, and serve as sensory cues for a spatiotemporal map formation in the memory of animals. Hence, in this talk I will summarize our current understanding of how odor molecules interact with neural systems to evoke the sense of smell. I will highlight the distance covered by the molecules from the source to a searcher, and how different regions in the brain of that searcher interact to guide behaviors.
