Statistics Netherlands

Statistics Netherlands participates in the VEO project targeted at identifying and detecting emerging infectious diseases using biodata and (big) data. This paper presents work on the design of a symptom driven social media analysis tool as well as various other scenarios where official statistics can help. One of them is to detect changes in local mobility patterns to identify a possible emerging disease outbreak. Another example is to combine sewage samples with demographic characteristics to more precisely identify outbreak characteristics. Yet another one is to compare a social network of relationships derived from administrative sources with disease spreading.
