The SALSA project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, aims to develop innovative communication concepts for mixed traffic involving automated vehicles. The goal is to ensure safe and intuitive interaction between automated vehicles and various road users. Following a user-centered design process, four communication prototypes were developed: Avatar, AV to X, 360° all-round display, and Expressive Driving Dynamics. Each prototype was adapted to specific traffic scenarios and tailored to the perspectives of pedestrians, cyclists, and car drivers. To present the concepts, user narratives and graphical depictions were created, illustrating the respective traffic situations and communication strategies. In the qualitative evaluation, pedestrians, cyclists, and manual car drivers were each presented with the prototypes corresponding to their respective traffic scenarios. Additionally, one domain expert per group was interviewed. The semi-structured interviews focused on user experience, acceptance and potential areas for improvement of the communication prototypes. The presentation outlines the development and evaluation of the prototypes and discusses implications for designing effective communication strategies that foster trust and mutual understanding in interactions between humans and automated vehicles.
