This paper presents a co-simulation approach that directly connects PSCAD with an aeroelastic wind turbine tool, enabling EMT studies that combine specialised modelling capabilities from the electrical and mechanical domains. A co-simulation module, consisting of a custom dynamic link library (DLL) and a Windows Service, is developed by Fraunhofer IWES to connect both environments with minimal integration effort. To demonstrate its applicability, simulations are carried out with a representative manufacturer model of a multi-megawatt wind turbine. We replace the EMT model's simplified mechanical representation with a detailed aeroelastic model. The co-simulation is excited by mechanical and electrical step functions in the form of a sudden increase in wind speed and a voltage dip, respectively. Plausible agreement is observed when comparing the simplified and detailed model in the time and frequency domains, while the simulation speed remains constant. This study describes the technical basis for future studies of electromechanical interactions during grid-forming operation. Future work will extend the signal interface and integrate test bench models to provide a complete digital representation of grid-forming (GFM)-controlled wind turbine testing and validation campaigns.
