The increasing penetration of converter-based resources changes the dynamic behaviour of power systems and reduces the stabilizing effect traditionally provided by synchronous generators. Grid-forming control is a promising approach to provide voltage-source behaviour, inertia-like response, and power sharing in future power systems with high inverter penetration. However, comparable EMT-based studies of distributed grid-forming units in realistic grid configurations are still limited. This paper presents an automated electromagnetic transient simulation framework implemented in DIgSILENT PowerFactory and controlled through the Python API. The framework separates simulation setup, execution, and result processing and enables repeatable test cases, automated result storage, and post-processing.
It is applied to a German 110 kV distribution-grid model with conventional generators, mixed
RL and power-electronic loads, and three grid-forming inverter clusters. The inverter model combines VSM-based control with cascaded voltage and current controller and active LCL-filter damping. The framework is demonstrated for an islanding process.
