This paper investigates the dynamic stability of the Martinique Island grid with a 185 MW load and 19.38 MW of synchronous

generation, mainly supplied by photovoltaic and wind power. The analysis is performed using RMS simulations in DIgSILENT PowerFactory and shows the comparison of two selected stability-support configurations against the unsupported base case: Virtual Synchronous Machine (VSM)-based grid-forming battery energy storage systems (GFM-BESS) and synchronous condensers. The GFM-BESS case includes two 24 MVA converters with an inertia constant of H = 2 s, whereas the synchronous condenser case has two parallel 23.5 MVA units with H = 3 s and IEEE AC1C excitation control. A short circuit fault is applied on the transmission line for 200 milliseconds, after which the transmission line is disconnected. Both technologies contribute to enhancing the stability of the grid using different means. Specifically, the GFM-BESS technology sustains the maximum speed of the synchronous generators at nearly 1.020 p.u., as compared to 1.028 p.u. in the base scenario, and ensures that the smoothed bus RoCoF is greatly reduced. Conversely, the synchronous condensers provide smooth electromechanical responses while providing reactive power and fault current support. Consequently, both configurations provide complementary stability support in low-inertia grids.
