This paper reviews methods of calculating Critical Clearing Time (CCT) in power systems. Most existing CCT studies focus on power systems dominated by Synchronous Generators (SGs). In contrast, the impact of Synchronous Condensers (SCs) on CCT in modern power systems remains less explored. SCs are increasingly deployed to provide system strength and to support higher penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs). In the Australian power system industry, system strength refers to the ability of power systems to maintain a stable voltage waveform both in normal operation and following disturbances. This paper compares the CCT of a SC and a SG of equivalent rating using a simplified single machine infinite bus model. The simplified framework enables a direct comparison without the confounding effects of additional system complexity. The study also investigates the influence of the inertia constant of SCs and SGs on CCT. It is widely assumed that the additional inertia provided by SCs enhances system stability as SGs are progressively displaced by IBRs. The provision of system strength by SCs decouples their operation from system loading, hence future systems may exhibit comparatively high inertia levels during light-load periods. This likely alters oscillatory behaviour and damping in the future power system.
