The increasing integration of renewable energy sources and growing network loading intensify the need for efficient utilisation of existing transmission infrastructure while maintaining N-1 security. Grid boosters (GBs) provide a fast curative congestion management measure by modifying power flows following a contingency. This paper proposes a methodology for the technical evaluation and placement of GBs in transmission networks and demonstrates its automated implementation using PowerFactory and Python. Where required, the methodology determines a preventive secure dispatch and generates contingency-dependent curative set points for GB operational planning. The results demonstrate that GB effectiveness strongly depends on the point of connection. A suitably located GB can enable secure operation under more constrained transmission capacity and reduce the preventive redispatch required to achieve N-1 security.
