Today, power systems are undergoing a radical transformation, primarily driven by the increased integration of renewable generation, power electronics devices, and the widespread adoption of advanced control paradigms. Among the most innovative converter topologies for renewables integration, Matrix Modular Multilevel Converters have emerged as a highly cost-competitive solution for grid interties and the interfacing of local distribution systems (such as offshore production plants) operating at different nominal frequencies. This paper presents a control-focused perspective on incorporating grid-forming functionalities into this emerging technology and introduces a novel grid-forming control scheme enhanced with predictive capabilities. The proposed approach significantly improves the robustness of converter-based transmission infrastructures against long-cable resonance conditions and enables broader deployment in power networks.
