As power grids rely more heavily on power electronics, grid codes now extend to fault ride-through, reactive power, and post-fault active power recovery requirements for demand facilities. However, national implementation varies significantly, requiring location-specific designs. This paper presents a case study for a 300 MW PtX facility examining how thyristor-based and IGBT-based rectifiers differ in grid code compliance. The requirements are assessed through power system simulations in DIgSILENT PowerFactory, covering steady-state, harmonic, and dynamic analyses. Thyristor-based rectifiers may require significantly larger passive filters to meet harmonic distortion limits. Multi-pulse configurations reduce harmonics but introduce operational constraints: harmonic cancellation requires balanced loading across all rectifier units, which is not achievable when individual units are offline for maintenance. Thyristor solutions may struggle with fast post-fault active power recovery requirements due to slow on-load tap changer voltage control. IGBT-based solutions achieve harmonic and fault ride-through compliance with reduced filtering needs. Technology selection is strongly governed by grid code dynamic response requirements, highlighting the importance of early-stage grid code assessment in PtX development.
