Comparative Analysis of an Extended Matching Control and a Synchronverter Based on VDE FNN Requirements for Grid-Forming Units

Presented by: Linus Hertle
This paper thoroughly compares and presents two extended grid-forming (GFM) control methods, Synchronverter (SV) and
Matching Control (MC), for inverter-based resources (IBR) in modern power systems with declining inertia. It presents a uniform
parameterisation approach based on the start-up time constant and enables a fair comparison in accordance with the latest GFM
requirements set out in the VDE FNN guideline ’Technical requirements for grid-forming capabilities including provision of
inertia’. The control methods are implemented in hardware on a 30 kVA laboratory-scale converter test bench and subjected to
frequency gradient and islanding events. The experimental test results reveal the structural limitations of both SV and MC with
regard to the GFM requirements during frequency gradient events. Based on the comparative analysis and experimental results,
recommendations are derived for the practical implementation of the control methods on real converter hardware.
The studies are being carried out as part of a doctorate.
