In this study, 526 existing wind power plants in Sweden were assessed for retrofitting with photovoltaics (PV) using a Boolean overlay approach. The analysis includes suitability layers covering suitable, unsuitable, protected nature, national-interest, and forest-specific categories, together with restricted and buffered layers accounting for solar irradiance, infrastructure, terrain, and proximity constraints. The results show that: (i) the PV retrofitting power potential ranges from 1.15 to 12.90 GW, with forest land inclusion being the dominant driver; (ii) the hybrid power plant (HPP) qualified area increases substantially more than the potential retrofitting PV area when additional suitable layers such as forest and agricultural land are included, suggesting that the limiting factor is not land availability but rather the point of interconnection (POI) capacity; (iii) the retrofitting PV capacity potential increases approximately linearly with the buffer distance; and (iv) the energy yield of the 13 retrofitted parks shows that the solar-to-wind ratio ranges from 0.25 to 0.95 with only 1% curtailment on average. Finally, the framework can be easily adapted to other regions or applied to different retrofitting projects.
