VRE Integration and Congestion Management in the Peruvian Grid
WISO25-334
Presented by: Lukas Wolff
In our study, an hourly dispatch analysis using the software SDDP is conducted to investigate and compare different expansion scenarios to strengthen the Peruvian transmission system until 2036 in the context of increasing shares of variable renewable energy connections and increasing electricity demand. A special focus lies on the Southern region, which will experience large amounts of new PV installations and the expansion of its mining industry. The assessed solutions are i) battery energy storage systems, ii) reinforcement of the AC network between Southern and Central Peru and iii) additional construction of High-voltage DC transmission. Our findings suggest cost-competetiveness of HVAC and HVDC solutions and show pathways when and how storage and transmission solutions can complement existing HVAC transmission systems.
