Frequency-Domain Approach for Quantifying System Strength Contributions from Grid- Forming Resources
WISO25-346
Presented by: Shahil Shah
This presentation will describe the use of Q/V and P/ frequency scans for grid-forming (GFM) resources to quantify their contribution to grid strength. Grid strength contributions from various GFM resources including battery energy storage systems (BESS) based on inverters with GFM controls and synchronous condensers will be compared using this approach. It will be shown that SynCons provide highest grid strength contributions for the same rated capacity compared to BESS plants. It will be shown that while the grid strength contributions from different GFM BESS resources from different vendors can be different, they generally fall within a narrow range, which can be used for planning purposes when vendors for GFM vendors are not yet identified.
