Integration of Photovoltaic into Electricity Networks and Markets – Overview of the new IEA PVPS Task 19
Task 19 of the IEA PVPS program is dedicated to the integration of photovoltaics (PV) into power grids with the aim of establishing PV as the central pillar of a fully renewable energy system. Building on the experiences from Task 14, Task 19 was launched in 2024 to address technical, regulatory and economic challenges of PV network integration. More than 50 experts from 20 countries have defined 25 activities in nine research fields in five workshops, including topics such as grid capacity, prosumer rights, smart grids, inverter technologies and local energy markets.
The international network started in 2025 with 40 nominated experts from 18 countries to work on:
- National PV Targets vs. Grid Capacity
- Rights and Obligations of Prosumers
- PV in the Smart Grid
- Registration and Commissioning
- Curtailment – Power Management
- New Inverter Capabilities
- Aggregators, Local Markets and Energy Communities
- Local Energy Management
- Energy Economy in a 100% RES Based Power System
The aim is to identify and overcome barriers to the implementation of national PV expansion targets, for example by developing hosting capacity models, new inverter capabilities (e.g. Grid-forming), as well as by promoting aggregators and energy communities. An agile working approach with "Joint Research Activities" enables flexible, result-oriented collaboration. Task 19 also strives for a stronger digitization of dissemination, for example through a lively online platform in addition to classic technical reports.
The results are intended to help decision-makers, network operators, manufacturers and prosumer organizations to integrate PV efficiently and sustainably into future electricity networks and markets.
