WISO25-222
Presented by: Anton Koninckx
The rapid deployment of renewable energy is essential for achieving Europe’s climate and energy security objectives. However, without strong local support, social acceptance risks becoming a barrier to timely project development. This paper examines the drivers of public resistance - such as land use concerns, limited perceived benefits, and misinformation - and offers a practical framework to strengthen community support. Drawing on insights from developers and academia, it presents best practices for creating win-win outcomes through proactive community engagement and benefit-sharing measures tailored to local needs. Key success factors include trust-building, transparency, independence, adaptability, and long-term commitment. The paper also highlights the important role of policymakers in fostering supportive environments by streamlining permitting, enabling flexible legal frameworks, and linking renewable projects to visible local benefits, such as increased municipal revenues and economic opportunities.
