Wind Task 51 and PVPS task 16: Introduction and outlook from the work in IEA PVPS Task 16
WISO25-216
Presented by: Jan Remund
PVPS Task 16 aims to facilitate the integration of photovoltaic (PV) systems into energy grids by reducing costs and uncertainties related to solar resource assessment and forecasting.
The introduction by the Task Manager includes the overview, the specific work regarding grid integration: forecasting on different temporal and spatial scales and firm power studies. Additionally an outlook of the upcoming working areas will be presented (new phase of the project 2026-2029).
Regarding solar forecasting three approaches are investigated:
- Nowcasting based on All Sky Imagers
- Probabilistic forecasting
- PV power forecasting at different scales (e.g. for DSO's)
A benchmark of probabilistic forecasting was published; a benchmark of cloud based forecasts is currently written and a benchmark for numerical weather prediction based forecasts is planned for end of 2026.
Work on Firm Power is ongoing. Here we investigate the economic optimum between storage and curtailment or renewables.
A new report is foreseen for the end of 2025. The current state and overview of all studies done will be shown.
Additionally an outlook of the linked work in IEA PVPS Task 19 is given.
