The Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN e.V.) is leading the global effort to advance interoperable and scalable charging solutions for electric vehicles (EVs). With a focus on both the Combined Charging System (CCS) and the Megawatt Charging System (MCS), CharIN is shaping the future of high-power charging across passenger, commercial, and heavy-duty transport sectors.
CCS, now capable of delivering up to 1000 kW, supports fast and reliable charging for light- and medium-duty EVs. MCS, designed for ultra-high-power applications exceeding 3.75 MW, enables the electrification of demanding sectors such as logistics, mining, marine, construction, and aviation. Together, these technologies form a complementary ecosystem that supports the full spectrum of e-mobility needs.
CharIN and its members are the enabler of intelligent energy systems through the implementation of ISO 15118-20, which facilitates Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) communication, Plug & Charge, smart charging, and secure data exchange. Through initiatives like V2G Testivals and its Grid Integration Focus Group, CharIN fosters collaboration among OEMs, CPOs, DSOs, TSOs, and aggregators to ensure seamless energy interaction.
To secure interoperability, CharIN has established a global Conformance and Interoperability Program. This includes structured testing frameworks, priority-based test cases, and certification via cross-certified labs. The CharIN Conformance Label serves as a trusted mark of quality and compatibility, supporting regulatory acceptance and market confidence.
By harmonizing standards, promoting cross-industry collaboration, and certifying reliable charging solutions, CharIN is laying the foundation for a connected, intelligent, and future-proof charging infrastructure—accelerating the transition to sustainable, zero-emission mobility worldwide.
