Social Status of Professional Profiles Across Gender and Origin in Spanish Society: Experimental Evidence
panel.4-225 - Floor 1-05
Presented by: Jordi Brandts
Through online experiments, we examine differences in social status, defined as the position an individual occupies within society or a social group. We analyze eighteen professional profiles to assess whether status varies according to gender and origin (Spanish vs. non-Spanish). The analysis considers both shared beliefs within groups and personal opinions about status, as well as the discrepancies between these two dimensions.
We report findings from two independent studies. In Study 1, participants are university students in Spain, and the focus is on gender-based differences in social status. In Study 2, participants are drawn from the general Spanish population, and we investigate status differences based on both gender and origin.
Across both studies, we find no significant average differences in status attribution based on gender, whether considering shared beliefs or personal opinions. In Study 2, profiles of non-Spanish origin are consistently assigned significantly lower status levels compared to those of Spanish origin. Furthermore, status levels vary depending on the level of the professional profile and the source of status being evaluated.
