Gender Effects in Peer Nominations for Academic Research Funding
panel.2-223 - Floor 1-01
Presented by: Patrycja Janowska-Widomska
We let academic faculty members nominate their colleagues whom they perceive as worthy of receiving additional research funding. They do so knowing that one of the decisions will indeed be implemented. In contrast to our pre-registered hypothesis, we see little evidence of gender bias or homophily (tendency to support colleagues of the same gender). There is, however, a difference in the contents of free-form justifications of the choices, with faculty members nominating women rather than men being relatively likely to mention their personal or family circumstances rather than focusing solely on their academic merits.
