Political Tribalism and Voter Preferences
PS2-G09-02
Presented by: Jona Krutaj
We assess whether voters exhibit political tribalism by choosing candidates who are less competent but more aligned with their political identity than the alternative. We also examine whether political tribalism is stronger than a sport-related natural identity or a minimal group identity manipulation. To answer these questions, we design two simple economic experiments that provide clear information on the competence and political preferences of different political candidates offering voters a choice between a more competent candidate or an alternative candidate who aligns more closely with their political preferences. We find that around one voter out of five in our sample exhibits political tribalism. Sports identity influences voting decisions to a lesser extent than political identity, while a minimal group identity has no influence on voters' behavior.
