Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancer diseases, and preventive screening programs are of essential importance as early diagnosis significantly increases the chances of survival. Despite the good accessibility to preventive care in Slovakia, the take-up rate remains low. To shed light on the reasons behind the poor uptake of colorectal screening, we run an online survey experiment with a sample of 808 Slovaks in the target age between 50 and 65 years. We compare observable and measurable characteristics of respondents who are active with respect to their participation in prevention screenings to the inactive ones, focusing on potential barriers to participation. Additionally, we test the causal effect of three theory-driven information treatments and an offer of a free fecal occult blood test home-kit delivery on intentions to get screened. In a follow-up survey conducted three months later, we ask respondents if they have undergone any prevention screening. We find some differences in the characteristics of active and inactive respondents and the null effects of the information treatments.
