Challenges in Grid Integration of BESS with Wind Power
02 HYB26-79
Presented by: Slavomir Seman
The real implementation cases shows that top challenges in the integration of BESS + Wind utilizing hybrid control are related to grid code compliance at the connection point. In the most of the cases it is caused by not optimized split of control functionalities between Master Plant control, Follower controllers and Power Electronic Converters’ controllers. A modern Hybrid Plants are also expected to provide Grid Forming functionalities at the Point of Connection. Mainly ability to operate in an island mode and provide system restoration support during a black start. The other challenges are related to EMT and RMS simulation models especially to their availability and plausibility. Modelling of a hybrid power plant is becoming even more challenging when several OEMs are involved that are supplying simulation models developed on different approaches, which sometimes may cause certain inconsistencies in entire plant simulation model. This challenge can only be solved by higher level of standardization of plant simulations focusing on adaptation of simulation models by means of proper validations assuring sufficient fidelity and interoperability. Last, but not least are the challenges related to safe and reliable operation of Batteries as well as Battery Management (charge, balancing, cooling) those functionalities must be properly integrated into overall control and coordinated with the other plant control functionalities.
