The increasing integration of intermittent renewable energy sources into electricity grids poses significant challenges to grid stability, flexibility and reliability, particularly with the phase-out of conventional fossil-fueled power plants. The Reference Power Plant Lusatia (RefLau) project focuses on developing an innovative hybrid storage power plant concept completely powered by renewable energy, designed to demonstrate high flexibility operation, hydrogen production and re-electrification for long-term storage as well as the provision of essential ancillary services to replace the stability currently offered by rotating masses in conventional power plants.
In this work, a deterministic Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is developed to evaluate the optimal economic dispatch strategy utilizing historical data from multiple electricity markets, including wholesale energy markets (day-ahead and intraday) and ancillary services, such as Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) and automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR).
The analysis aims to identify optimal dispatching strategies that maximize revenue streams while improving grid flexibility and effectively managing peak demand. A sensitivity analysis further investigates the impact of hydrogen storage capacity and upward aFRR energy prices on revenue streams and the optimal purchase cost of power plant components.
This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of the economic potential and operational constraints of power-to-power hydrogen systems, offering insights and incentives for future investments, bidding strategies, supporting power plant operators in enhancing profitability and operational efficiency.
