Hybrid energy systems, composed of varying shares of renewable generation, energy storage, conventional generation, and flexible loads, require complex coordination and monitoring. Educational institutions can preferably develop environments that bridge theoretical knowledge with practical experience. In response to this, the Åland University of Applied Sciences (ÅUAS) has developed a comprehensive laboratory designed for real-world experimentation with hybrid and smart grid technologies The lab combines hands-on accessibility with advanced technical solutions, enabling simulations of on-grid and islanded operation, ancillary services, and maritime applications relevant to shipboard power systems.
