Hybrid Power System for Emission Reduction at the Duisburg Gateway Terminal: A Case Study of the enerport-II Project

The goal of the enerport-II project is to transform the Duisburg Gateway Terminal (DGT), a newly built, fully electrified container terminal in Europe’s largest inland port, into a carbon neutral smart microgrid which also has the potential to support neighbouring industrial and residential districts with renewable energy, if required. To this end, a hybrid power system is installed at the DGT, which includes a photovoltaic plant, a lithium-ion battery energy storage system, as well as two hydrogen-based combined heat and power stations and two hydrogen-based fuel cells, in addition to the regular grid connection. This study utilizes a combination of field and synthesized data and a mixed-integer linear programming model to evaluate the expected annual carbon emissions savings achievable through this investment. Six scenarios are investigated, which depict varying availability of green hydrogen, plant availability and the two construction phases of the DGT. The results show that 1,224 tonnes of carbon emissions can be omitted annually due to the combined usage of photovoltaics and hydrogen conversion.
