The Australian NEM continues to rapidly install wind and solar at utility scale, in conjunction with high levels of rooftop PV, resulting in significant negative pricing during daylight hours. The business case for hybridisation of wind and solar assets has continued to strengthen with several hybrid plants under construction in 2024 across Australia. Using information from the Australian NEM Generator Statistical Digest 2023, this paper will highlight the economics for stand-alone utility-scale solar are faltering, with hybridisation the only long-term solution. Similarly, this paper will show the hybridisation benefits for other fuel types will begin to impede future stand-alone BESS installation revenue, as coal-fired, gas-fired and hydro plants integrate some BESS capabilities into their operational performance.
