News Deserts, desertification, and its consequences for countries (particularly with regard to political participation) have become a subject of interest in research, especially in the US. In Europe, research activity has also begun to focus on the phenomenon of news deserts and their consequences. While Kübler and Goodman were able to establish as early as 2019 that less dense media coverage is associated with lower voter turnout in Switzerland, the latest figures on desertification for Switzerland were not yet available. In order to address this research gap, a data set was created as a project for the Swiss Federal Office of Communications. This project involved desk research, which enabled the examination of the print media in Switzerland from the years of 2015, 2020, 2022, and 2024. The data obtained facilitate the creation of a comprehensive overview of the print media landscape in Switzerland over time, in addition to providing a detailed analysis of economic developments within the Swiss newspaper sector. Consequently, the data enable the anticipation of potential future developments and risks, with a particular focus on those of a political nature.
