Much scholarly attention is being paid recently to democratic backsliding and its consequences. We add to this growing literature by investigating the relationship between democratic backsliding and subjective well-being, broadening the discussion on backsliding to include psychological repercussions. Using the most common measures of democracy and survey data on life satisfaction over time, early results suggest that a negative relationship exists between democratic backsliding and subjective well-being. We discuss potential mechanisms and implications.
