This experience paper presents a novel approach to developing AI literacy through innovative teaching practices using Open Educational Resources (OER). A blended learning approach was developed with the focus on promoting the ethical and responsible use of AI tools for academic research and writing, utilising a dynamically growing nationwide online repository of OER materials on artificial intelligence. Between November 2024 and February 2026, virtual and face-to-face courses were delivered to over 600 students in various bachelor´s programmes as part of their curriculum module Key Qualification - Academic Research and Writing. The purpose of the course was to raise awareness about the ethical and responsible use of AI as well as to provide students with practical AI skills. A quantitative research study was conducted alongside the course to assess the effectiveness of the blended learning approach. Competency assessments administered before and after the course indicated improvement in several areas of AI literacy, particularly in confidence in using unfamiliar AI tools, in awareness of potential bias and discrimination in AI-generated outputs, and in AI use for university studies, while changes in general attitude towards AI remained insignificant. Course evaluation results provide evidence that combining eLearning with interactive lectures is an effective way to develop AI literacy for students.
