To show competitive power, organizations have a tendency to portray themselves as digitally advanced and capable in their use of digital tools and artificial intelligence (AI). However, such representations may not always reflect the real level of digital maturity and competence. This qualitative study shows that taking a university course in continuing education enhances professionals’ understanding of digital processes and AI. This enables them to make more accurate analyses of the level of digital maturity in their organization by using a framework of different generations of digital maturity (Kræmmergaard, 2024). The findings reveal a discrepancy between professionals’ perceptions, before and after the course, of organizational digital maturity and the actual integration of digital technologies in their everyday work practices. Based on these findings, the paper introduces the concept of a ‘Digital Maturity Perception Gap’(DMP-Gap), highlighting how perceptions of digital advancement may exceed the actual level of digital maturity, technological use and integration in practice. The study contributes to both research and education on digital transformation by revealing the risk of maturity overestimation when examining how digitally mature organizations believe they are.
