From Board Game to Learning Game: A Practical Workflow for Designing Unplugged AI Literacy Activities
Presented by: Sigrun Norhagen

AI literacy is increasingly essential in K–12 education, yet many schools face practical constraints around screen time and device access. This demonstration presents AI Timeline — an unplugged card game for AI literacy — alongside a reusable workflow for designing educational games that teach about AI without screens. The game was developed through systematic application of the LM-GM framework (Arnab et al., 2015), mapping a familiar timeline mechanic to learning objectives. The demonstration introduces an interactive digital resource guiding educators through six steps to replicate this process for their own subjects, validated against Laine and Lindberg’s (2020) motivator taxonomy. The game has been piloted with teacher education students with iterative refinement.
