This concise article, Unsettled: Global Perspectives on AI in Education, presents the Luuk Terbeek’s book project of the same name regarding the global impact of generative AI on education.

Although technology is designed to make life easier, learning often requires struggle and perseverance. The rise of generative AI amplifies this tension and creates uncertainty and difficult dilemmas for education. This calls for a careful and well-informed response from the education sector.

Unsettled will provide a nuanced picture of both the opportunities and risks of AI in education, enabling readers to make more informed decisions to safeguard educational quality. It consists of nine chapters, organized across three levels. The first part addresses issues of governance, knowledge concepts, and ethical boundaries. The second part focuses on knowledge infrastructure, curriculum renewal, and collective action for transformation. The third part explores the practical implications of AI for research, teaching, and learning. The content is based on in-depth conversations with more than forty experts and stakeholders from all continents, education sectors, and organizational levels. Among the interviewees are leading international thinkers, policymakers, and researchers affiliated with organizations and institutions such as UNESCO, the OECD, Stanford, Oxford, and UCL. Their diverse perspectives highlight the complexity and diversity of the impact of AI on education. As a result, Unsettled offers a unique collection of accessibly described valuable and concrete insights.

The primary target audience consists of teachers, teacher trainers, educational consultants, policymakers, and educational leaders, but the book is also intended to inspire students, researchers, and other education professionals.

Author royalties will be donated in their entirety to the UNESCO SDG 4 Emergency Fund.
