In dual higher education, competence development depends not only on workplace experience itself but also on learners’ ability to reflect on that experience in a structured way. As educational research has long emphasized the importance of dialogical learning for fostering self-reflection and metacognitive skills, Socratic AI dialogue can be understood as a promising extension of this tradition. Recent research suggests that such structured AI-supported dialogue can deepen reflective thinking in higher education (Xi et al., 2026). This concise paper introduces Allex, an AI-supported reflection chatbot designed to foster competence development through a structured and pedagogically constrained reflection process. Rather than evaluating reflection quality alone, Allex performs competence-referenced formative diagnosis by identifying which Future Skills are evidenced in students’ narratives and how strongly they are expressed. Accordingly, the paper examines how a pedagogically constrained AI-supported reflection tutor can support reflective competence development in dual higher education.
