Designing of Teacher-Centric Learning Analytics Dashboards for Data-Informed Teaching
Presented by: Shweta Roy Chowdhury
As higher education becomes more digital, Learning Management Systems now collect large amounts of student interaction data. Although learning analytics has been used to improve teaching and learning, most studies focus on dashboards for students, not on how teachers can use data in their work. This PhD research aims to fill that gap by studying how teacher-focused learning analytics dashboards can help teachers make data-informed decisions.
In the first phase, I reviewed learning analytics dashboards published from 2015 to 2025 and found several issues. Many dashboards focus more on visuals than on providing useful insights, lack a strong connection to learning theory, and are rarely tested in real classrooms. Based on these findings, I am creating a dashboard prototype with tools such as KNIME and Grafana that aims to help teachers interpret data, reflect on their teaching, and make informed decisions.
Next, I will test the dashboard in real educational settings to see how teachers use the data and whether the dashboard helps them improve their teaching. The goal of this study is to offer both a framework and practical advice for designing dashboards that support teachers.
