Relocation is a common transition in older adults´ lives that can disrupt existing social networks and challenge seniors to reconstitute these networks. Social engagement is a required component of the process of reconstituting social relationships and of feeling connected. One example of relocation is moving to congregated housing that is often described as the last chosen move and occurred in response to ageing. The study is based on the move to living in a congregate housing that promote older adults´ independent living. These apartment buildings have the conveniences of common activity areas, a communal dining room, and easy access to public transportation. Drawing on interviews with elderly living in the housing we discuss the intersections of ageing, safety and inequalities. Focusing on the stages of move and settling in we investigate negotiations of age, ability and safety. The findings indicate that the informants´ expressions of engagement in social activities is related to ability and that loneliness is related to age and ability and not primarily to the housing situation. The participation in social and physical activities is highly gendered and related to economic capacity.
