Science denial challenges risk governance. Environmental risk analysis, management and communication are all impeded by activities of science deniers. The research on denialism focuses on issues relating to, for example, characteristics of denial, explanatory theories and counteracting strategies . Based on a recently conducted review of 165 scientific articles on environmental science denial published in the last 25 years, this presentation describes the features of denialism linked to risk and uncertainty, and how to potentially defend science and science-based risk governance. A particular focus is placed on risk communication in relation to other counteracting strategies. A set of conclusions on the role and responsibility of researchers as well as policy-makers is presented.
