Empowering citizens to secure for their own safety and well-being in times of a crisis have become a prioritized subject for political discourses on crisis preparedness and civil protection during the last couple of years. Guidelines for surviving 72 hours (or even 10 days) without electricity, water or heating are being promoted by both governmental agencies and voluntary organizations. However, we still know very little about how households perceive these messages and guidelines for crisis preparedness. This presentation summarizes the results from several studies on household crisis preparedness where household preparedness is understood as an integrated part of people’s everyday life. Based on fieldwork and household interviews the research results answers questions such as: How do people make sense of crisis preparedness? What kind of preparedness activities do they engage in and why? What kind of material and social resources are central to their crisis preparedness and in which way?
